Bangladesh has surged 11 spots in the United Nations E-Government Development Index (EGDI) for 2024, ranking 100th globally out of 193 countries. With a score of 0.6570, Bangladesh surpassed both the South Asian average of 0.5855 and the global average of 0.6382. Among the least-developed countries, Bangladesh holds the highest EGDI value, followed by Bhutan, Rwanda, Nepal, Cambodia, Zambia, Senegal, and Myanmar.
The report, titled “E-Government Survey 2024: Accelerating Digital Transformation for Sustainable Development,” was released on September 18 by the UN Department of Economic and Social Affairs. Bangladesh’s improved performance in Online Services and Telecommunications Infrastructure sub-indices contributed to its rise, positioning it ahead of countries like Bhutan (103rd), Nepal (119th), and Pakistan (136th) in the South Asian region.
Globally, Denmark, Estonia, and Singapore lead the digital government rankings for 2024, excelling in online services, telecommunications, and human capacity. While Europe remains a global leader in e-government development, Asia, driven by progress in countries like India and Bangladesh, is showing the fastest improvement.
The EGDI is a composite index based on the Online Services Index, the Telecommunications Infrastructure Index, and the Human Capital Index. Despite global advancements in digital transformation, challenges remain in utilizing these technologies to enhance public services, a crucial aspect for achieving the UN’s Sustainable Development Goals.
