As the world grapples with unprecedented challenges, from climate change to global inequality, the Summit of the Future, taking place this September at the United Nations Headquarters, aims to restore global trust and enhance cooperation for a better future. The Summit, which was born from the lessons of the COVID-19 pandemic, seeks to address the gaps in international cooperation and recalibrate the structures of global governance that have been in place for decades.
The Summit was first envisioned in 2020, during the UN’s 75th anniversary, when Secretary-General António Guterres launched a global dialogue to assess the future of international collaboration. The pandemic starkly highlighted the shortcomings of global cooperation, as countries, instead of uniting to face the common threat, turned inward. This failure to cooperate on a global scale underscored the need for a renewed approach to global governance.
In response, Guterres produced the “Our Common Agenda” report, which forms the backbone of the Summit. The report outlines strategies for addressing global risks and reimagining a future based on stronger international cooperation. The Summit of the Future, now set to unfold, will host high-level discussions centered around five key themes: sustainable development and financing, peace and security, a digital future for all, youth and future generations, and global governance.
While governments will be at the forefront of the discussions, the Summit promises to be an inclusive event, bringing together civil society, youth representatives, the private sector, and academic institutions. The goal is to ensure that voices from all sectors of society are heard, reflecting the belief that global challenges require input from all walks of life.
Michele Griffin, the Policy Director of the Summit, emphasized the importance of trust as the foundation for meaningful international cooperation: “The most important ingredient in international cooperation is trust. Trust in each other, a sense of our shared humanity, our interconnectedness. And the summit is designed to remind all of us… that we have to work together to solve our biggest shared problems.”
Key players at the Summit will include civil society groups, private sector leaders, and youth activists. Youth participation is particularly significant, as the future they will inherit is being shaped by the policies and agreements forged today. The inclusion of private sector leaders acknowledges the vital role businesses play in shaping global economic trends and technological advancements.
The Summit’s outcome will be the adoption of the Pact for the Future, which includes critical components such as a Global Digital Compact and a Declaration for Future Generations. These agreements are designed to lay the groundwork for addressing issues ranging from technological equity to sustainable development and human rights.
However, the conclusion of the Summit does not mark the end of these discussions. According to Griffin, the event is “the beginning of a process” where the seeds planted during the summit will take time to grow and flourish. The onus will be on governments, organizations, and civil society to hold global leaders accountable for their commitments made during the Summit.
In the coming months, the UN’s focus will shift toward implementing the recommendations of the Pact. The upcoming COP29 Climate Conference in Azerbaijan in November, as well as the UN Conference on Landlocked Developing Countries in Botswana in December, will build on the momentum of the Summit by addressing climate finance and sustainable development.
The Summit of the Future represents a critical opportunity to address the shortcomings of the current international order and deliver on promises made in earlier global agreements like the Paris Climate Accord and the Sustainable Development Goals. It aims to create a framework where future generations can thrive in a more just, equitable, and peaceful world.
As global power dynamics shift and new challenges emerge, this Summit has the potential to reshape how nations collaborate and ensure that the structures of global governance are prepared for the realities of the 21st century. The event underscores the urgent need for unity in facing the threats that transcend national borders, and serves as a reminder that only through cooperation can the international community forge a path toward a more stable and prosperous future.
