Vote.org, the nonpartisan voter engagement platform, announced Wednesday that over 1 million new voters have registered for the 2024 election cycle. Of these, 17% are from the top seven swing states—where the 2020 election was decided by narrow margins—setting the stage for a close contest between Vice President Kamala Harris and former President Donald Trump this November.
Notably, more than 376,000 voters have registered since President Biden withdrew from the race in July. Swing states such as Georgia and Pennsylvania have seen surges, with over 40,000 and 37,000 new voters registered, respectively. Arizona, Michigan, North Carolina, Wisconsin, and Nevada have also seen significant registration boosts.
Young voters under 35 make up a record 79% of new registrations, which could benefit Harris, who is favored by 50% of voters aged 18 to 29, according to an NBC News/SurveyMonkey poll. Additionally, 34% of new voters are freshly eligible 18-year-olds, a sharp increase from 8% in 2020.
Andrea Hailey, CEO of Vote.org, emphasized the organization’s continued efforts to combat voter suppression and empower new voters ahead of National Voter Registration Day.
